our news about the 2004 fundraising activities of William's Fund:
Mike Lord ran the Windsor ½ marathon for us and raised £205, quite impressive as we only gave him the sponsor form 3 days before the run! Well done Mike, now you know how your clients feel as you run them ragged! (Mike is a fitness instructor and personal trainer!) Thank you.
Anna Horrocks hosted a Christmas Shopping event at her house on 4 th November. There were some fab stalls and a steady flow of customers. All the stall holders donated the raffle prizes and donated 10% of their sales. Thank you to Anna and all the stall holders. Chris Myers once again opened her now beautifully extended house to the ‘Angels Gather Here' sale for Christmas. As in previous years Chris had a lovely collection of Christmas goodies and a splendid aroma coming from the home made biscuits, soup and coffee! Donations were given to William's Fund via cute little buckets around the house! Thank you Chris once again and to all who made donations. £80 was raised. The Activity Chest
Pronuptia in Gerrards Cross launched their new Evening Wear line on 4 th November. The guests were treated to Champagne and canapés before a fashion show. The dresses were gorgeous and modelled very well by 3 lovely girls and a few little people! The raffle was in aid of William's Fund and the 1 st prize was a dress donated by Joe and Amalia Warren of Pronuptia from their new line. Thanks to Joe and Amalia for supporting us and to all the models Lucy Cork, Natasha Dudley and Hannah Baker, also to Bradley for serving the canapés. £185 was raised.
David Jenkins - Alpe D'Huez ride David Jenkins completed his incredible ride up Alpe D'huez.... I cannot seem to find the words to express how I felt when I saw the picture of him with 'For William' spray painted on the wall!
The Stone Challenge was held once again this year at the Beaconsfield Golf Club, a fantastic event with a superb atmosphere. Greg and Amanda Myers started the Stone Challenge in memory of Amanda's brother's fiance; Andrea Stone who sadly died of Melanoma in Australia in the same year as William lost his fight. Every year at the post match dinner Andrea is remembered and the event is a very poignant one. We are privileged to be associated with Words from Gred: The idea behind the Stone Challenge was my response to encountering an individual who possessed an abundance of qualities and a depth of inner strength that deserved to be remembered. Aside from the family connection, in many ways it was about my personal appreciation of a real star. Fortunately or unfortunately, we rarely witness the real and deep strengths that friends and family possess more often driven out of tragic circumstances. Instead we all too often fall victim to what the magazine racks tell us we should look and be like, creating aspirations to become David Beckham or Jennifer Lopez, materialistic and too often too self obsessed! Andrea to me was a real reminder about what life should be about and that it should be people like her we should all be aspiring to replicate . She made her friends feel there is something special in them, she looked at the sunny side of everything, gave everyone a smile and with her illness was simply too big for worry and too noble for anger. The concept of the Stone Challenge was simple, to remember Andrea and to create an event built around family and friends to take some inspiration/meaning from her hence why we toast our inspirations each year. Beaconsfield Golf Club, where I am a member, host 3 charitable events each year so on 11th April 2001, 27th March 2002, 2nd April 2003 and 6th The day is funded by donations which purchase the raffle prizes and golf prizes . The top three teams all win bottles of South Eastern Australian wine, nearish Melbourne where Andrea was born. To date we have raised just shy of £20,000. The significance of the association with Johanna and Peter, Anthony & Emma (parents of Nick currently fighting Leukaemia) etc is hugely important as to me it highlights the impact that Andrea and William have had in bringing friends together and creating new ones very symbolic! This is why it is important to me that the day is designed to be fun because as tragic as this is, the legacy that William and Andrea have created is priceless and worth enjoying and celebrating. Greg.
Ten teams entered the tournament which took place on Gold Hill Common right opposite the pub. The teams were randomly allocated 'Euro' names and played on two pitches. When I arrived at the 1/4 final stage the teams were having a well earned rest in the blazing sun. The atmosphere was fun but tinged with competitiveness! The teams were from a selection of local pubs, friends and regulars of The Village Hall. The organiser Rachel Hayne from The Village Hall said she was 'pleased with the enthusiasm, it had been a lovely day...competitive but friendly...up to a point! It is great to have so much local support and spectators' The Latvia and France teams (French Horn Pub) were comprised of: Latvia were winners of the 'Plate'! Alastair Pitfield gave me the following quotes....! 'It was like a one man band' 'Chalfont Common graced by legendary Pitfield performance!'...he even gave me his autograph while the rest of the team looked on in amazement!! The semi finals hotted up with games from Croatia Vs Italy and Switzerland Vs England, I was very impressed with the level of play especially the girls! Croatia (friends of The Village Hall, from North London) won 3-0 with a team comprising: Dan Shanks(C), Jim Shanks (The Cat), Tony Sollo, Damon Quinlan, Martha Dixon, Christine Brown and Michelle Breen. After the game Tony Sollo commented that they had "Skill, experience and novel talent from the girls" referring to a slightly embarrassing revealing moment from Michelle after which she scored....while they were all recovering?! Switzerland from our own local paper the Bucks Advertiser: Jon Fisher (The Cat), Gareth Cox, Vanessa Moore, Suzy Talbot, Stuart Brown and Moni Fouzder, then played England: Somerset Hughes, Karen Collinge, Sarah Allen, Becky Poulton (Becks), Liam Lynch, Stuart Ross, James Hughes, Steve Horn, and Player/Manager Simon Hughes. The result a 3-0 win to England ...."we was robbed" said Jon Fisher...."it's only a game" said Stuart Ross! The final took off in a blaze of heat, an exciting game, I for one was grateful for the presence of the girls to lower the testosterone levels on the pitch! A close game ending in a 1-0 win for Croatia...the tournament winners! Well done! The day ended with a presentation to the tournament winners and Thanks to all who organised the event. We would like to say Thank you to the Village Hall for choosing to support William's Fund, Rachel Hayne and to everyone who took part in a fabulous day! The total raised was £229.
A fantastic turn out of approx 80 riders some in incredible costumes - the sun shone all day and everyone was smiling and enjoying the duck races! The ride started with a gathering at the Queen's Head Pub in Church Street,Chesham, Karin & John (looking fantastic in his wig and braces!) had everything organised with the start banner and balloons in place... the ride was started at 11am ish by Peter cutting the balloons (don't mention the technical hitch!)and all the riders took off looking eager to complete the 5 miles ahead. Amongst the riders were Daisy & Fred in complete wedding attire astride a tandem belting out the 'Daisy Daisy' tune! Little children on the back of bikes in child seats and some very small children riding it alone. I hope I caught everyone on camera as they passed through the start line, or the finish. The ride was followed by a BBQ at the Queen's Head, a magic show which held the children enthralled for an hour, and duck racing on the river running next to the pub! We were thrilled when William's duck won a race! Later in the evening there was a 'yard of ale' competition which got very exciting when someone took up the challenge with a 1/2 yard of white wine!! In answer to this a wager was laid down by Walter for someone to beat the time for £100 for William's Fund! The locals then chipped in another £60 to ensure the wager was taken up...which it was! An extremely exciting day, wonderful weather and fantastic hospitality from all at the Queen's Head. Thank you to all the participants and volunteers and everyone who contributed. We had a glorious time! Some of the prize winners were: Best Fancy Dress - Nick Muir ( Tiger ) Best mode of transport - Nikki & Scott Summerling ( tandem) Daisy & Fred! Youngest participant to go round at own steam - Jake Choules. Top fundraiser to be announced at a later date. We do not have a total raised yet but will post it as soon as we do. Thank you Karin and John and all The Queen's Head! Please note that the banner stating Start and Finish needs to be the other way round! photos taken from the front read the wrong side! All those photographed with the 'Start' sign are actually the fastest finishers!! The event raised £1,695 We had glorious weather for the fun and games on Bank Holiday Monday at Wexham Park Golf Course and at Cannons Health Club. The Captains held their golf days at the same time and supported the charities as well. All the events were to raise money for families who have lost unborn babies, William's Fund and The British Heart Foundation. The project was the brainchild of local PGA Golf Professional, Martin Heys, who worked very hard to make the day a success. Martin was helped by Dave Tolchard and staff at Cannons. The children had a fantastic time hitting and putting golf balls in the various challenges. The grown ups attended the Golf Clininc held by Martin and everyone had fun at 'Beat the keeper' and the bouncy castle. Well done Martin and thank you to all those who came along. We will update you on the total raised as soon as we know it.
Gerrards Cross Fire Fighters hosted a fantastic car wash on Saturday 15th May. The crew started at 9am working solidly until almost 4pm. The weather was glorious and the cars just kept rolling in! The system worked well with a hose down, hand wash, power hose and hand The day was interspersed with water fights and a birthday cake for Lucinda who gave up her 5th Birthday to clean cars for William's Fund! We all helped, and our shoulders certainly knew about it on Sunday! The Fire crew had even drafted in other firefighters to cover the car wash Many thanks to all the Fire Fighters for making it such a fun day and to Matthew, Freddie, Anouska, Edward and Lucinda for all their help. Thank you to all Lucinda's little friends who came along to say Happy Birthday and helped to clean cars too! Also a big thank you to Ba who took pity on us and brought rolls and fairy cakes for refreshments! Oh and thanks to Jackie for setting it all up! The total raised was £600. To see larger versions of each image, please click on the image Sunday 16th May brought another glorious day for runners and walkers of the 5km fun run. Quite a few runners turned out for Williams Fund but as we were not as organised as we should have been I cannot thank everyone by name yet! I do know that we had runners as young as 9years old but I'm not revealing the oldest...it might be me! Thank you to all our walkers and runners, we look forward to seeing your times! Thank you to Claire Simpson for organising the Maltmans Mums.... what would I do without all these lovely helpers?! PS - There was a splendid turnout of T-Shirts this year which put ours to shame!! We have used the same T- Shirts for a few years now for all the events we have entered or held, we are now down to a few sad wornout shirts! If anyone knows of a textile printing company who would like to help us out, or if you would like to sponsor us for some new clothing... hats, T -
On Tuesday 30th March Etcetera Restaurant held a Champagne & Diamonds evening in association with Bradley and Walker Jewellers. Champagne tasting was led by wine connoisseur Robert Dale who guided us through six vintage and non vintage and rosé champagnes. The bubbles were accompanied by an array of delicacies from the Etcetera kitchen as we feasted our eyes on the exquisite diamonds and pearls from Bradley and Walker.
Robert did not have an easy task as the restaurant was buzzing with the sounds of admiration both for the food and the magnificent jewels which were brought to the tables to be admired. However I think Robert's passion for his subject won through and we all left knowing a lot more about the Champagnes we were sampling - all from the houses of Moet et Chandon and Montmarthe. The evening was set off wonderfully by the black and white tables throughout the restaurant matching the Bradley and Walker portfolios and jewellery boxes. William was ever present from the beginning! As we entered the venue the cabinets shone with an array of fine jewels, I was drawn to the item attracting most attention...a beautiful necklace featuring a 'star' design - I immediately thought that Wills was there somehow, and I said as much when I addressed the restaurant to tell them a little about William's Fund. The Raffle tickets were then sold amidst the excitement of the wonderful prizes on offer...Magnums of Champagne, Krug Dinner for Four and Marilyn Monroe giftware - all kindly donated by our host Kevin Farran. And the highlight of the raffle, an exquisite Diamond pendant donated by Bradley and Walker. The total raised for Childhood Cancer Research from the raffle was a fantastic £1,130. We would like to thank everyone who came and supported William's Fund through the Raffle, Mr Robert Dale for his exceptional insight into the world of Champagne, Bradley and Walker for their donation of the diamond pendant and display of diamonds and pearls and last but not least all the staff of Etcetera for their hard work and to Kevin for supporting William's Fund once again in such a stylish manner! Annabelle Watson School of Dancing - £700 - This is an amazing total from a dance performance by very young students from 2 ½ yrs old to approx 6yrs old! The performance was videoed by John Cable (one of the Dads) who then reproduced the film onto DVDs and sold them with the profits to William's Fund! The cheque was presented to Johanna at a dance class and the pupils were extremely well behaved and danced beautifully! Thank you to Miss Watson for organising the performance, to John Cable for reproducing the DVDs, all the parents for their support and of course all the fantastic dancers! Ashleigh & Ellamae Godwin - £18.60 - These children wrote a lovely card saying: We are Ashleigh age 9 and Ellamae age 6. We heard of William's Fund, as we are friends of James and Fiona Woodhead. Each year we use our pocket money to help a children's charity and last year we decided to support William's Fund. We have raised £18.60 which Mummy helped us with. We hope it will help. God Bless. Thank you girls and God Bless you too! Oxford University Press - £225 - donated from a freelance editor. Thank you Oxford High School - £530 - This was a clever entrepreneurial idea! Ivy Callaway and Sophia Dutton organised a group of their friends from Oxford High School (Year 8) to go to a local bookshop and wrap Christmas Presents, what a fantastic idea! The girls worked hard at Borders Bookshop in Oxford over a 10-day period, they raised £1,057, which they split between 2 charities. St Helen's Old Girls Club - £100 - Thank you once again Ladies! Christmas Cards 2003 - £15,000 - A fantastic profit this year from 'Snow Dreaming' and quite a few 'Rehearsal' cards. Thanks to my Mum for painting the pictures!! Huge thanks to all our helpers who sell the cards for us; we couldn't do it without you! Thank you also to The Print Centre for their continued support and hard work on delivering the 100,000 cards to us, and to The Midas Press for their Artwork. Finally thank you to everyone who buys the cards! Mr John Hills - £50 - this arrived 'anonymously' thank you ! Mr Sebastian Bowen - £10. Sebastian was our Ski Club of Great Britain Ski Guide in Alpe D'huez, we got chatting about William and he very kindly made a donation. Natasha Jackson and Anya Nelson (age 11yrs) £33.65 - These girls both attend Beaconsfield High School and know of William's Fund because Natasha has a younger sister at school with Lucinda. The girls decided they wanted to raise money for us and took their proposal to the headmistress for a 'guess the number of sweets in the jar' contest, (there were 295, which had to be counted repeatedly because someone kept eating them!!) The event took them a few days but in the end they both said it was the highlight of their term. Thank you girls and Beaconsfield High School. Anonymous donor - £3060.00 - This couple are known to us and we have thanked them sincerely.
